Accessibility

Fragments is built to be read comfortably by as many people as possible. Reading is the whole point, so legibility and navigability come first.

What we do

• Semantic HTML with proper headings and landmarks, and a “skip to content” link.
• Full keyboard navigation, with visible focus outlines.
• A light and a dark theme, with colour contrast chosen for readability.
• Text that scales with your browser settings, and generous reading measure and spacing.
• Respect for the “reduce motion” system setting — animations are minimised.
• Alt text on images, and labelled, operable controls on the interactive figures.

Known limits

The data essays include rich interactive figures; while they’re keyboard-operable and their key findings are also stated in the surrounding text, some fine visual detail is inherently visual. We’re always working to improve this.
